As I mentioned on my last Art Day post I’ve been exploring the mixed media worlds as of lately.
I’ve glued a thing or two to my paintings/drawings before but this is the first time I’ve done it so deliberately.
A while ago I got some metallic paints and I’ve been loving the way they look on wood. Combined with the rhinestones + glitter + glossy finish, it looks like wall jewelry.
This is the result of my first try, which I finished at the end of January. I used part of a drawing that I found in one of my sketchbooks from years ago (yes, way before I had dreads. yes, I draw the future )
I love how this turned out. I wish the paper hadn’t gotten all wrinkly and bumpy after putting glossy sealer on top, I still have a lot of experimenting to do.
But I like the direction in which things are going
N. asked me why would I paint the back if no one was going to see it, and I said it was like asking “why add a lining to a skirt?”. I think it says a lot about me.
I had never done collages or much with mixed media before. My mom really loves it though, and she’s been making beautiful things that way for a while. Recently she found the fantabulous, sparkly + inspiring Suzi Blu and her fun/awesome/ridiculous and super inspirational youtube videos where she shows how she makes art and talks about her philosophy of life in between all other sorts of cutesy craziness. She urged me to check her out and when I did I was delighted and instantly in love!
Suzi has a blog and an online art academy where she teaches workshops with names like: Be. Divine. , Mystic Mamas or Be Brave, for art lovers who might have been afraid to make art in the past.
Suzi’s just great.
Watching her videos got me really excited and inspired to start making collages and experiment more with mixed media myself.
One of the things she talks a lot about in her videos are art journals which she fills with drawing, paintings, collages, poems & thoughts and all sorts of mixed media and she encourages you to do the same yourself.
So I went and bought a big black sketchbook and decorated the covers mixed media style, using ribbon, lace, sequins, rhynestones ect… I enjoyed it a lot.
It’s my Art + Dreams + Desires Journal that I mentioned in my last post. I started to actually fill it on my birthday and I want it to be kind of like a vision board but in art journal form. I will fill it with photos, collages and art that represents the things that I want in my life . It’s been making me very happy . It is a very magical book already.
And I glued little silver stars all over the back.
It’s Friday! I’m excited for the weekend, are you?
I gotta do some Christmas shopping & decoration! It should be fun!
But before I get to that, let me show you a couple more of my pictures from back in the day (that are worth showing).
Soon I’ll be showing you more recent ones!
♥
As I’ve mentioned before, I tend to be the main character in my own creations…
· Bathtub Dream Lounging ·
This one I started & mostly finished at least a couple years ago….and added up the last few details & touched it up yesterday!
· Dragged by the Balloon of Wonders ·
This picture I also started & mostly finished around a year ago, and then I added the glitter coat to the balloon space yesterday.
♥
I hope you all have a great Christmas-Preview-Weekend!
My pictures are like little stories. Snapshots of emotional states of being .The characters are real but my view of them distorted in all sorts of magical , sparkly and fantastic ways. I make pictures to express the crazy world inside my head. It’s a world that I love and it makes me squeal & twirl with glee when I am able to make it so others can also see…
With time my pictures have started to look more like in my head, it’s hard though, and that’s what keeps me searching and learning.
Sometimes when there’s a birthday or special occasion and I get inspired to do so I make a picture of that person in their universe as I see it. It’s all a story in my head and they’re the main character.I always need a main character in my creations, and it tends to me be or some version of myself. So it’s always really fun to build and work around a different character and story.
As I was just back home I thought I’d share a few pictures I’ve made for my mom & sister in the last year or so:
I named this ‘Patiently Waiting’ & made it for my sister’s 17th birthday.
This I made for my mom’s last birthday. My family had never had a pet & after I moved out and got a kitty, I kind of convinced them to get one for themselves! She’s helped my family so much & brought them so much happiness! I ♥Princesa.
I haven’t been drawing too long and I am completely self-taught. I learn by just paying a lot of attention to what I am doing and also by studying other artists’ work that I look up to. It’s an ever evolving process for me. A very pleasurable one at that. It’s something I started doing more when I was 19 or so and it is something I love doing very very much. I plan on spending a lot more of my time making drawings/illustrations.
I have tried all kinds of mediums but since I’m kind of special in the way I perceive colors, it’s most stimulating & rewarding for me to use glitter, metallic, pastel & gel pens to play with color. Colors that are difficult for me to distinguish like blue & green, aren’t so much with all those different textures! I also use color pencils, glitter, markers, acrylics & even nail polish, depending on the piece.

These two pieces I drew over a year ago and didn’t color in until this fall. It’s something that happens to me quite often actually, to make a black and white drawing and set it aside and rediscover it later on and add color to it. I think it is because after some time has passed I can sort of see “the bigger picture” and add another dimension to it.

I think I like this concept of Art Fridays, I might make it a regular!
